Abrasive Media Blasting

Abrasive media blasting has advanced far beyond traditional “sand blasting,” which once relied on the use of sand that contained free silica, the Quartz element found in some types of stone, sand and minerals this posed serious health risks such as silicosis. Modern abrasive media blasting uses a wide range of safer, purpose-designed medias including Garnet, Iron Silicate, Copper Slag, Aluminium Oxide, Re- cycled Glass, Steel Grit or Shot, along with many others. These options allow for precise, controlled blasting suitable for delicate restoration or heavy-duty surface preparation of steels and cast irons, making abrasive media blasting a safer, more effective, and highly versatile solution for professional surface preparation and cleaning.

The Power of Abrasive Media Blasting

Abrasive media blasting covers a wide range of media types, including Sand, Garnet, Iron syndicate, Steel Shot and many more. Some of these Processes can be done wet, but the principles are the same: media propelled at high speed, with or without the infusion of water. To clean, prepare and create a surface profile, more commonly known as an angular profile, to allow the paint or coating to bond with the surface correctly.

Abrasive media blasting is the most important stage to achieving a professional painted or coated surface. Producing results that can far exceed the original, where proper surface preparation hasn’t taken place.  Any experienced painter will confirm that the secret to a flawless finish is simple: Preparation, preparation, preparation.

Far from being limited to heavy industry, abrasive media blasting can be adjusted for delicate, intricate, or softer materials such as wood, glass, brick work and certain types of stone. It’s an incredibly effective way to transform items that look beyond repair by stripping away rust, paint, corrosion, and years of surface damage, to reveal what lies beneath.

At CJK, we provide many types of abrasive blasting for cast iron, steel, aluminium, stone, brickwork, concrete, wood, etc., bringing surfaces and even forgotten items back to life.

The Versatility of Media Blasting

Media blasting is a highly versatile process used for surface preparation and cleaning. With a wide range of media types, from fine powders to coarse granules, and various pressures, media blasting can be tailored to suite a wide variety of construction material and applications. Far beyond the old idea of just for heavy industrial work. Modern media blasting is suitable for some buildings, woods, brick and stone types.  Removing dirt, stains and paint. It can also be used for retexturing worn surfaces to restore grip like concrete, stone slabs, block paving and other stone-based flooring materials.

Media blasting is also widely used for cast iron and steel structures, machinery, chassis & vehicle parts, and engine components, as well as, for removing graffiti from buildings and public surfaces. Its precision and control even make it valuable in creative work, producing frosted effects on glass and detailed wood carving.

As with all abrasive cleaning, the process can and does reveal underlying flaws or weaknesses in materials, any defects exposed during or after blasting remain the responsibility of the item owner. This is why industry uses this cleaning process, prior to inspection and testing of Materials and components.
