NARROW BOAT RESTORATION

Sand Blasting a Narrow Boat as part of a restoration project.

HIGH PRESSURE ABRASIVE BLASTING (SAND-BLASTING)
This boat was in need of some restoration work while it was out of the water. I was contacted by the customer about removing the old flaking paint / coatings.

SITE INSPECTION
On a close look at the boat on location, I found that it had some steel fabrication work done in the past (Re-Plating of the lower sections below the water line)

OUTCOME
This steel plate work & any previous work had not undergone any proper preparation of the steelwork hull, to remove the hot rolling Mill Scale. Prior to painting or coatings being applied in the first place.

Although this boat had good “galvanic corrosion protection” the steelwork hull was pitted in places where the coatings had failed due to inadequate surface preparation prior to painting or coating being applied to the hull.

BLASTING PROCESS
At CJK SANDBLASTING, we are set up for many types of abrasive blasting, both low pressure & high pressure work. This application required the use of high pressure blasting with the use of Iron Silicate as the blast media. As the objective was to create a real clean surface with an angular profile.
So that the new paint or coatings, had adequate surface area to bond with the steel, both mechanically and chemically.
